Rejection, The sounds of silence. Why I still write.

So like every other author out there I have been rejected. In this case the rejection came in form of no response by the appointed deadline and not a formal rejection, but it is still a rejection. I don't submit many of my stories, because I really just write for fun. I have a few pieces that I think are worthy of publication, but most of it is just as I said, just for the love of writing. Not that I don't think it is good, if I didn't think it was good I would not bother even posting it. Rather, that I don't or have not spent the time of it that it would require for what I would call a professional publication.

I think that unlike many people who write, I am not writing because I want to be a writer "when I grow up." I write just because I love doing it, and if a few people get some enjoyment out of it then that is great. Thus I created GreatHites.

There are many sites / publications out there that will publish your hard work, and those are great. Beyond traditional paper publications, there are (and before you say it, I know this is not news) web publications, such as the Escape Artist group of Podcast, started by Steve Eley, that will pay you for your hard work. Well, GreatHites is not like that. First of all I can't afford to pay people for their work. Not at a rate that would be worth it anyone to submit, and if I was going to pay people I would want to pay them a fair amount. Second, because that is really not what this is about.

I know there are other sites out there like mine that invite people to write and submit their work for free, just for the love of writing and the joy of having other people read it and get some enjoyment out of it. Like The 100 word story contest By Laurence Simon

Now, before you get that "ah, he has sour grapes syndrome" look on your face and start clicking off this entry, let me tell you that is not the case. I still plan to submit the stories that I have written and I think are worthy elsewhere. The point of this whole thing was to say that I have examined why I write and come up with the answer. I write because I enjoy writing, if I get paid for it or not is not the issue I get enjoyment from writing and have other people (even if that other only is the 30 or so people that are subscribed to my site) read my stories. I enjoy it so much that I want to share that feeling with others, which is why invite others to write with me every week.

In the end, I don't care why you write. It could be because you love to write, or because you want to be paid for it, or maybe a little of both. What is really important is that if you want to write do it, and don't let anyone stop you.

Singularity

SciFi: 5 SciFiSciFiSciFiSciFiSciFi

Singularity, is a hard hitting Sci/Fi, with plenty of hard science to back it up. When the Astrophysicist Jack Adler shows up in Tunguska, with his theory that a black hole and not a comet or meteor caused the 1908 event, he didn't expect a warm welcome, but what he got was beyond his wildest dreams. Never did he believe that his little research trip would turn into, and fight for his life and the lives of every person on the planet.

The story starts following a rookie undercover agent, an astrophysicist and a top of the line business consultant, and brings them all together in ways none of them could imagine. The is a wild ride that if it didn't have naked singularities in it would be hard not to classify as action adventure. If you like, computer hacking, black hole physics, crazy Russian schemes, hit men for hire, beautiful women, expensive boats, chase scenes, cloak and dagger or stories about the end of the world you will like this book.

Bill DeSmedt, has masterfully crafted a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat from the moment you pick the book up (or in my case put the head phones in your ears) to the last second. The audio version of this, which you can find a podiobooks, is of the very highest quality.

This book is wonderfully done, keeping true to the hard science where possible, and stretching the rules without breaking them only where absolutely necessary. The characters are full of depth and emotion so that you even feel something the deadly hired gun. Mr. DeSmedt's use of language turned even the sometimes dry world of astrophysics into something almost poetical. With the exception of, what I feel, were slightly more graphic than needed sex scenes, I would give this book my highest rating.

Where to begin

I have started a blog a couple of times before and was never sure what I should do for my first entry. I mean I know it will get buried under all the other ones, but you have to start somewhere right?

So, now that we have that out of the way let's start by talking about what I plan to do with this blog / podcast.

First, In the future if I am running late this is where you are going to see the why and how. You may see a quick note on GreatHites, but most likely it will just be a link to here. I really want to keep the other site dedicated to writing, and if I keep adding personal things then it detracts from that. I think that the people that write for GreatHites deserve all the attention they can get so, I this is an attempt to keep the clutter to a minimum.

Second, I read a lot of books. Well I think I read a lot of books, and podiobooks is my new best friend, since I work during the day and I get listen while I am working, or driving to and from said work. What is the point of all this. Well I intend to write reviews of the books (and movies) that I have read / listened to / watched. If I can link them to reviews that I have written on other sites I will do that.

Third, I am not a one trick pony. I am more than just stories about the odd topics that I pick, so this is where I will talk about some of the other things that I am doing. Things that are going on in my life that I deem interesting enough to share with you.

Fourth, if I do something of interest on other sites I will put a link to those here.

Fifth, I am tossing the idea around about having this be the place where you can discuss some of the stories on GreatHites. What you like, what you didn't like and what you think the new topics should be.

Last but not least, this is where I will ask questions of you the reader / listener about what is going on at GreatHites. These will be things like how can I improve the site. What kinds of things would you like to see that would make the whole thing a better experience.

All in all this is going to be a personal blog and hopefully this will he worth your time and be interesting enough for you to read. Please feel free to leave comments
